The New Fever Waltz. Stone's Throw From Hurtin'.But many of their earliest songs from the late '60s were left on the cutting room floor — until now. They were first paired up by Liberty Records after responding to the same advertisement seeking songwriters and wrote more than a dozen songs remotely before meeting face to face.
It surprised me that I actually like them so much. I was dreading it. With this box set, "you can understand the big arc of our work and those baby steps that were taken," Taupin says. John, 73, and Taupin, 70, discuss "Jewel Box," their longtime partnership and more:. Question: "Scarecrow" was the first song you wrote together in Do you remember how that one, in particular, came about? Elton John: Not really because I wrote a lot of those songs without ever having met Bernie. I knew that my own words weren't very good.
But I was excited because I was still in Bluesology and I was writing these songs. I never thought in a million years it would lead to me being Elton John, the artist. I thought we would write songs for other people and that was the way it would turn out. I wanted to write things like "Scarecrow" and "Regimental Sgt.
You listen to "Regimental Sgt. Zippo" and it's a double pastiche on what the Beatles were doing, but they were our first efforts. Q: Did you ever reuse any early lyrics or melodies in later songs?
Bernie Taupin: We referenced "Scarecrow" in a song later on. Q: "Your Song" was released 50 years ago last month. What does that song mean to you now? And he was a kid!

Instead, they hint at everything that was to come. John already has one career-spanning boxed set behind him, the out-of-print To Be Continued…but Jewel Box goes out of its way to be a very different, sometimes maddening beast. Its eight discs include a substantial chunk of unheard early material, like those Zippo tunes, but they sit alongside an even bigger batch of songs that have already been released in one form or another, either on albums or singles.
Starting with those Regimental Sgt. Zippo songs, the jewels of the box are those pre-fame recordings from the late Sixties, which take up three discs.
Elton John goes crate digging in his own vaults on Jewel Box and strikes gold
In those years, John was something of a pop mad scientist and a radio sponge, leaping from one style to the next to see which fit the best. As revealed by the over 50 songs he created and discarded, the sheer number of them is astonishing, but so is the quality. Instead of the homemade tapes that often fill up such collections, most of these are fully or largely realized takes cut with studio musicians and even string sections.
And what a wonderfully diverse assemblage of songs they are. He could seemingly discard as many songs as he wanted, knowing full well that another dozen of equal quality were around the bend, ready to replace them.
The hits eventually arrived—and kept coming, year after year, decade after decade, with intermittent gaps—and eventually overshadowed worthy songs tucked away on his many albums.Traka za hodanje
The fact that John has already released several compilations of all those same hits, and has even played them in a Vegas show, only reinforced this impression. To remind everyone that plenty of quality material has been forgotten or overlooked, John devotes two whole discs on Jewel Box to his favorite album cuts —his obscurity playlist, if you will.

Offering gems, misfires and revelations, Elton: Jewel Box is an absorbing opening of the vaults. Jewel Box does have a bit of a scattershot feeling to it, but the title itself implies that it's a place where rarities and gems are collected.
'I've never stopped enjoying singing it': Elton John on 'Your Song' at 50, new rarities box set
That's exactly what this set provides: some cuts are diamonds and some are zirconium, but they all have a bit of sparkle. In the universe of record collecting, there has long been a need for a well thought through and curated collection which presents a good overview of an artist while also offering rarities to appease the hardcore fans.
I never bought the four-CD set To Be Continued… boxed set as it seemed as I remember to have a lot of album tracks and was kind of a mish-mosh in its presentation.
I realize now that I probably need to revisit that set, but at the time I was waiting for something more akin to the Rare Masters set with more focus on the rarities. This provides insightful perspective on overlooked deep album tracks, unreleased demos and lost songs as well as a wealth of B-sides pretty much from all phases of his career. I have already reviewed an LP version of part of this collection which covers the early rarities before Elton took off here in America discs three, four and five in the CD set.
Please click here to jump to that review, in case you missed it. Overall, this set is beautifully produced. Most everything in this set sounds excellent as compact discs go. So in that sense alone, I consider Jewel Box to be a genuine success. More on that in Part II coming soon…. There are many CD singles and recordings made for the European market that really never saw the light of day here in America.
Several songs were released in French! These tracks also represent a lot of stretching out for Elton as he explores different sonic flavors and finds new footing.Satelit thaicom 5 lyngsat
It may seem like a throwaway to some but what is readily apparent is that Elton was having fun something that I think got lost for me on some of his 80s work. By doing this he found himself ahead of a trend, I think. I need to go back and listen to The Big Picture again. These could have been on a deluxe edition of the album easily.

Overall, this set is beautifully produced. It sounds excellent as CDs go — no harsh edges to the sound and there is remarkable sonic consistency across the different periods of his career kudos to the mastering engineer.
So in that sense alone, I consider Jewel Box to be a genuine success. Again, one of the hallmarks of a great compilation is that is makes you want to revisit and explore albums that you might have not given enough mindshare in the past.
While there are some choices I would have expected Elton to have in this final CD in the set — subtitled And This Is Me… music he refers to in his autobiography which I still need to read — there are some which I was pleasantly surprised to see listed here. The back story on this track which Elton explains in the liner notes is not lost on me. This song has fascinated me since I was about 10 or 11 years old and has long been important in my life Dear Elton, if you are reading this: Yes, I very much noticed what you were singing about… so… thank you!
The Book of Jewel Box. You got some CDs, a lot of cheesy plastic and usually a lame cardboard box plus if you were lucky some sort of 20 to 30 page booklet. Jewel Box was worth the wait as it is a far more substantial and high quality production. It revolves around hardbound laminated, graphically arresting book-style package. This attention to detail was worth pointing out. Kudos to the designers of this collection for creating something genuine and lasting for fans to cherish for years to come — a Jewel Box for sure.
And, sure you can go ahead and stream the Jewel Box in its entirety on many of the streaming services including on Tidal and Qobuz. But, I can honestly say that you are missing out on a huge portion of the fun by not having the physical product in hand and being able to read about the music inside.
